Movie - Ghostown
Saturday, October 4th, 2008This was a nice movie. Little language, no nudity - well, there was this one guy that wandered through but no intimate exposure. And they do talk about a mummy’s organ.
But this is about unfinished things, interruptions when people die. And how simple things can unkink hard knots, and allow lives to go on in peace.
Greg Kinnear is still Greg Kinnear. Maudlin cute, not that likable. He did this role pretty well - most everyone did. This is a nicely moving story, don’t look for any of the actors at Oscar time, at least not for this picture. But the story comes off nice, and tender.
*spoiler*
The story is, this paranoid, reclusive dentist dies during a routine hospital procedure. For seven minutes. When he recovers, and proceeds home, now he sees all the ghosts hanging about - ghosts of ordinary people that died, but their families are missing some important communication. And the ghosts want the dentist to fix things for them. Did I mention the dentist is reclusive, and obnoxious? That he is in the habit of blowing people off rather that acknowledge them or what they have to say? That he reported his neighbor for cooking obnoxious ethnic food that smelled horrible and caused his eyes to sting (tacos)? That is, this horrid little man won’t do anything for anyone.
But now he has become the hope of all these ghosts. That he just wants them to all go away.
Bringing it all together, with a love story twisted in, actually moves along rather well, and comes together pretty nicely.

I give the flick 4 stars of 5. The story came out nice; I didn’t recall any moments of greatness.
