California and marriage today

Tam at View From The Porch doesn’t discuss “Oh noes! Teh gayz are getting married in Kali!”. She does point out a couple of people that do discuss “Let them get married already” and “Gay marriage ban overturned.

The whole one-man, one-woman thing with marriages, I think, is a case of the Christian Church adopting social custom. If you are a good Christian, then by golly a marriage is when some guy marries a doll - for life or until the end of his honor, respect, and ability to enter a contract. (When Christians started marrying, vows meant something.) If you aren’t a good Christian, then marriage can mean about whatever you want. In the Bible a woman could be divorced but could never remarry (see the part about War Brides, and how they have to get along with your other wives). The Wedding at Canaan I read about doesn’t actually state that the bride is the first or only wife of the groom. I guess good wine is needed however many wives it is.

I guess gays and lesbians and others in alternate lifestyles want to marry to make a home. Why should they be any less confused than the rest of us trying to get by?

I already explained how I see fixing this marriage thing. Drop marriage as a governmental action. This lets churches do whatever they please. For ‘family’ purposes, use the IRS term - household. A household would be a combination of dependents and hopefully a breadwinner or two. We get away from the religious terms and definitions, keep the tax benefits. Simple. Everyone is happy but the bigots worried about what the other guy or gal is doing. And with time even the worriers should get over it.
