Messing with Sam’s Santa Claus

Sam had a close encounter – with a remake of Eartha Kitt’s old stag party ‘Christmas’ song, ‘Santa Baby’.

And her eleven year old came unglued.

If you listen to the song ‘Santa Baby’, it is clear this gem of Jazz music is intended for sexually mature audiences. The implication is clear that the singer is wheedling ‘goodies’ out of a ‘sugar daddy’ – a guy trading money and gifts for the current attentions of a woman trading sexual favors for the gifts, money, and attention.

Sounds like an impressive expression of the Christmas spirit, huh?

The song is excellent Jazz. And a very good composition; Ms. Kitt’s jazz interpretation is world class. But the implications of the song are pretty mercenary.

I am a bit surprised that Sam and her kid picked up on the underlying message of the song, which compromises the image of Santa Claus as a simple giver-of-gifts with no ulterior rationale for giving.

Sam, tell your son that is just a girl begging her date for expensive stuff, and not about Santa Claus at all. And warn him about dating girls like that.
